The Genkai set has several distinquishing features. The 1-Bamboo bird is bright and multi-coloured. Most impressive are the BLACK tile backs. The sides of the tiles feature unique spherical-shaped "side notches". (In the old days of bamboo-backed cow-bone or ivory tiles, the bamboo back was fitted onto a notched ridge on the back of the tile. Today some sets reproduce the "notch" on the side as a decorative feature in the tile design.) The tiles are made to Japanese specifications, with NO ARABIC NUMERALS. The set comes complete with scoring tallies and chips, wind marker and dice and is housed in a smart, vinyl presentation case with handle and snap-shut clips.
